Jobs Journal

Another busy week in Michigan as I write to you on this Wednesday.  Each day, I am up and running from dawn until dusk, talking to citizens around Michigan about my economic plan that is creating jobs and growing Michigan’s economy. This week, I have been discussing a very important part of my Jobs Today, Jobs Tomorrow plan with citizens all around the state.  The need to diversify our economy is critical to the future of the Great Lakes State, and an essential part of diversifying our economy is a commitment to alternative energy, an emerging sector in the 21st century.

Michigan is the natural epicenter for alternative energy production.  We design automotive technology.  We build the cars.  Our agricultural industry can support energy production, and we have a keen interest in protecting our environment.  It’s only natural that the state that put the world on wheels…would be the state that makes those wheels run on pollution-free fuel.

There are three key steps to making alternative fuels like ethanol and biodiesel available and affordable in Michigan.  First, we must produce it…and we are well on our way.  In the last six months, nine ethanol or biodiesel plants have opened, broken ground or been announced right here in Michigan.  Second, we must create incentives for drivers, fleet managers and others to use this fuel.  In July of this year, I signed legislation into law that provides tax cuts for citizens purchasing biofuel at any Michigan service station.  Third, we must make sure that citizens have access to biofuel, and I am excited to tell you that yesterday in Lansing, I announced that we will have 1,000 biofuel pumps in our state, E85 ethanol or biodiesel, by 2008!  This is great news for Michigan; we have the most aggressive alternative energy plan in the nation, and it’s already producing results.

Today I was in Detroit for the 157th annual Michigan State Fair.  Although the weather was a bit gloomy, Michigan fairgoers came out in droves to support our great agriculture industry.  I continued to spread the message to everyone at the State Fair that we will be the national leader in renewable fuel production.  People were optimistic not only about my alternative energy plan, but hopeful about my entire economic plan which is beginning to bear fruit.  Again, as the state that put the nation on wheels, I believe we should (and will) also be the state that breaks America’s dependence on foreign oil.  I continue to work my plan and fight for all Michigan residents.  As we march forth into this 21st century global economy, we must take with us determination and innovation.  I will continue to fight for a better Michigan.  Stay tuned…
