Why is it so hard to speak with a live person at the Treasury Department?
Two factors have created a challenge for customer service at Treasury. The first is the high volume of incoming calls. The second is the reduction in the Department’s workforce as a result of budget cuts in recent years. With more calls coming into Treasury and fewer people to answer them, only 1 of every 4 customers can be served over the telephone. Most callers want to know the status of their refunds or are requesting that a form be sent to them. In the past, these routine requests consumed a great deal of staff time and strained Treasury's ability to handle calls from individuals whose tax issues required more extensive research. To help address routine requests, Treasury has made several changes to its telephone system and website. For faster service individuals can now check the status of their tax return through a self-service option, available on both Treasury's telephone system at 1-800-827-4000 and the Treasury website. Taxpayers can also download most forms and instructions from this website. You may also wish to consult the online Treasury Department phone directory.

These forms can be printed, filled out, and sent into the appropriate division. Please visit their site to begin your search.
