Director, Michigan Department of State Police
Career Summary
Col. Peter C. Munoz was appointed to the cabinet-level position of Director
of the Michigan State Police by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm effective June
10, 2006. Colonel Munoz is the 16th Director in the 89 year history of the department.
As Director, Colonel Munoz also serves as State Director of Emergency Management
and as Michigan’s Homeland Security Director.
Colonel Munoz began his career with the Department of State Police in September
1978 as a member of the 95th Trooper Recruit School. His assignments included
the Flat Rock, Detroit, Ypsilanti, and Adrian posts; Human Resource Division,
Recruiting Section; and Governor’s Security Section. From 1993 to 1995,
Colonel Munoz served as the department’s Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative
Action Officer. In 1995 he transferred to the First District in Lansing as the
assistant district commander and was promoted to the district commander in 1998.
In 2003 he was promoted to the position of department deputy director in charge
of the Field Services Bureau. In this capacity, Lt. Colonel Munoz supervised
the activities of two regions encompassing 7 districts and 64 posts, two Special
Investigation divisions, the Motor Carrier Division, Field Operations Division,
and Intelligence Section.
Colonel Munoz holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Detroit
and is a graduate of the 187th Session of the FBINA (Federal Bureau of Investigation
National Academy).
