Whereas, Developmental disabilities affect more than 190,000 children and adults in the state of Michigan, which is nearly two percent of the state's total population; and,
Whereas, Every person, regardless of their abilities, has valuable strengths, infinite capacity to learn and the potential to make important contributions to their local communities; and,
Whereas, Those with developmental disabilities have the right and are encouraged to choose where they will receive their education, where they will work, how they will spend their free time and where they will live; and,
Whereas, Families of people with developmental disabilities give their ongoing support and commitment in order to help their loved ones live an independent and productive life; and,
Whereas, Celebrating the abilities and contributions of people with developmental disabilities can only serve to enrich the communities of Michigan and enhance our diversity;
Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 2009 Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Michigan. I encourage all citizens to recognize the contributions that citizens with developmental disabilities have made and to support their families.
