Whereas, Maintaining and supporting public education for Michigan's youth is a basic duty of state government as established in Article VIII, section 2 of Michigan's constitution of 1963; and,
Whereas, Michigan relies on public education to ensure a prosperous quality of life and the competitiveness of our state's economy; and,
Whereas, Michigan's elected school board members are dedicated public servants who commit themselves to many hours of time and effort on behalf of their school districts and communities; and,
Whereas, since 1949, the Michigan Association of School Boards has demonstrated civic duty by deliberating decisions that fundamentally enrich and enhance the quality of education for Michigan's students; and,
Whereas, the theme of this year's celebration, School Boards Lead Strong, reflects the devoted efforts of board members whose actions and decisions are crucial in shaping the education and future of our next generation so it can successfully compete in a global society;
Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 2009 as School Board Recognition Month in Michigan. I encourage all citizens to recognize and acknowledge the many important contributions school board members make to our children and communities.
