Whereas, Thousands of Michigan residents are affected by rare diseases that are very serious or even life-threatening, yet most rare diseases are untreatable; and,
Whereas, Eighty percent of rare diseases are obtained through genetic origins involving one or several genes or chromosomal abnormalities; and,
Whereas, Almost half of those afflicted with rare diseases in the United States are children; and,
Whereas, The research conducted on rare diseases can lead to important discoveries on other diseases that are considered to be more common; and,
Whereas, Many rare disease patients are unable to receive the highest attainable standard of health care due to the lack of public awareness and research; and,
Whereas, The lack or delay of access to a correct diagnosis can critically affect the patient and the progress of treatment if available;
Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do herby proclaim February 28, 2009, Rare Disease Day in Michigan. I encourage all citizens to reach out and support those with rare diseases by learning more about them and encouraging further research.
