Whereas, Radon is a tasteless, odorless, colorless, radioactive gas that appears naturally in soil and rock and can enter buildings through openings in the foundation floor or walls; and,
Whereas, The U.S. Surgeon General has issued a national health advisory about radon exposure due to the belief that elevated levels of radon in homes is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers; and,
Whereas, Any home may have elevated levels of radon, and testing for radon is an easy and inexpensive way to find out if your home has been exposed to radon; and,
Whereas, Nearly one in eight homes in Michigan have elevated radon levels and, in some counties, more than 45 percent of the homes have elevated radon levels; and,
Whereas, In Michigan, it is estimated that radon is the cause of more than 600 lung cancer cases each year, therefore the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and local health departments are working to inform citizens about radon and what can be done to reduce the risk of exposure;
Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the month January 2009 as Radon Action Month in Michigan. I urge all citizens to learn more about this environmental health threat and to test their homes for radon during this heating season.
