Whereas, With 3,288 miles of shoreline, Michigan has more coastline than the entire Eastern Seaboard of the United States; and,
Whereas, Michigan has a rich naval tradition beginning with the War of 1812; and,
Whereas, The name "USS Michigan" has been proudly bestowed on three United States Navy ships; and,
Whereas, Michigan is home to six Navy Reserve Centers serving more than 2,500 active reservists, a strong network of recruiters at Navy Recruiting District Michigan command, and a nationally prominent Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program at the University of Michigan; and,
Whereas, Michigan has a strong network of Navy League of the United States, a large contingent of Sea Cadets, and an active group of high schools that maintain Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) programs; and,
Whereas, Navy Week in Michigan has been developed in order to celebrate the past, present, and future of Michigan's long standing support of Navy service members; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of May 4, 2008, as Navy Week in Michigan. I applaud the Michigan citizens who have so proudly served their nation in the United States Navy.
