Whereas, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Michigan and the United States; and,
Whereas, It is estimated that 8,210 Michigan residents were diagnosed with lung cancer in 2007; and,
Whereas, Of that number, it is estimated that 5,840 will die from the disease; and,
Whereas, Smoking is the leading risk factor for lung cancer; and,
Whereas, Non-smokers who breathe second-hand smoke are at increased risk of developing lung cancer; and,
Whereas, Increasing age, a family history of lung cancer, and environmental exposure to specific cancer-causing agents such as asbestos and radon present in the workplace or home environment increase an individual's risk of developing lung cancer; and,
Whereas, The Michigan Department of Community Health's Tobacco Quit Line is available free of charge to all Michigan residents by calling 1-800-480-QUIT; and,
Whereas, Efforts are underway by the Michigan Department of Community Health, the Michigan Cancer Consortium and its members, the state of Michigan, and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention to educate Michigan residents about the risks of smoking and to create a better understanding of the resources available to assist in smoking cessation efforts; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2008 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and I encourage all citizens to increase their awareness of lung cancer issues.
