Go Red for Women Day

Whereas, Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death among women inMichigan; and,

Whereas, One in five females in the United States have some form of cardiovascular disease; and,

Whereas, Sixty-three percent of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms of this disease or did not make the connection between risk factors including high blood pressure and high cholesterol; and,

Whereas, February is designated as "American Heart Month"; and,

Whereas, By increasing awareness of the risk factors for heart and cardiovascular diseases and by taking actions to reduce them, we can save thousands of lives each year; and

Whereas, The American Heart Association encourages women to pay attention to their hearts and help them live longer, stronger lives by reducing their risk for cardiovascular disease; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 1, 2008, as Go Red for Women Day in Michigan, and I urge all citizens to wear red in recognition of family, friends and neighbors who have suffered from heart disease.
