Undergraduate Research Day

Whereas, One of the key missions of Michigan’s universities is to serve society and the State of Michigan by educating students to be future leaders in fields from science and technology to business, law, and the arts; and,

Whereas, Undergraduate engagement in research advances this mission at all of the state’s institutions of higher learning and across the entire spectrum of academic disciplines; and,

Whereas, An increasing number of our undergraduate students are participating in scholarly work with faculty and developing critical research and problem-solving skills to address important issues in the State of Michigan and our country; and,

Whereas, Every college and university in the state of Michigan engages students in cutting-edge research, from identifying genes that cause cancer, developing fuel-efficient cars, to improving literacy education; and,

Whereas, Student-faculty research partnerships integrate research and undergraduate education and enhance our students’ education and future contributions to the State of Michigan; and,

Whereas, 55 undergraduate students from throughout the State of Michigan including Michigan State University; the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn; and Wayne State University representing research in diverse fields will have research posters on display in the Capitol Rotunda, Wednesday, March 22, 2006, demonstrating the breadth and depth of research engagement in all fields; and,

Whereas, The research posters demonstrate the substantial contributions that students, faculty,  and our research institutions make to advance knowledge and address critical problems confronting our state and our nation; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 22, 2006, as Undergraduate Research Day in Michigan, and I commend our colleges and universities for playing a vital role in educating our students and our citizens.
