Sled Dog Days

Whereas, Sled dog racing is a unique and exhilarating sport enjoyed by people of all ages throughout many parts of the world with the real stars of each race being the teams of sled dogs whose training and care can be compared to that of an Olympic athlete; and,

Whereas, The International Federation of Sled Dog Sports reported that during the 1996-97 season, 4,637 mushers competed in 811 races for a total of $1,611,475 in purse money in the United States alone; and,

Whereas, Michigan is a winter wonderland that has become a prime winter destination for mushers and spectators alike, contributing greatly to Michigan’s winter tourism industry and to our state’s economy; and,

Whereas, The largest sled dog race of the continental 48 states, the “Mackinaw Mush”, drew a record entry of 197 teams last year, and this year is expected to climb to 225 teams; and,

Whereas, Michigan is also a world leader in the production of dog sleds, hand-made by master craftsmen, which are used in sled dog races around the world; and,

Whereas, The State of Michigan is pleased to recognize the sport of sled dog racing and its contributions to our Great Lakes state and to the enjoyment of our citizens; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 30, 2004 through February 1, 2004, as Sled Dog Days in Michigan.
