Whereas, The United States Marine Corps traces its intuitional roots to the Continental Marines of the American Revolutionary War by resolution of the Continental Congress on November 10, 1775, that we celebrate this day as the United States Marine Corps Appreciation Day; and,
Whereas, The United States Marine Corps progressed in its mission to change military doctrine and American foreign policy; and,
Whereas, The United States Marine Corps has been present and served in every American armed conflict by remaining America's fighting force for the last 233 years; and
Whereas, By the mid 20th century, the United States Marine Corps had become the dominant theorist and practitioner of amphibious warfare as a result of having the ability to respond rapidly to regional crises; and,
Whereas, The United States Marine Corps plays a strong role in the implementation and execution of American foreign policy, with 194,000 active duty and 40,000 reserve Marines; and,
Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 10, 2009, United States Marine Corps Appreciation Day in Michigan. My deepest appreciation to the members of the United States Marine Corps for their loyal and dedicated service to our great state and the United States of America.
