Whereas, Lead poisoning is acknowledged by the health, education and scientific communities as the number one environmental health hazard for Michigan children.  Yet, poisoning by lead-based paints, house dust and other sources is preventable; and,

Whereas, Promotion of health, prevention of illness, and improved quality of life for all children one priorities of the state of Michigan, which is why lead poisoning awareness and prevention activities were established to help protect the citizens of Michigan, especially those under six years of age who are most vulnerable; and,

Whereas, Education regarding healthy behaviors that prevent encounters with lead or recommending precautionary steps while handling lead, can help maintain maximum health and potential and prevent illnesses such as chronic disease, learning and behavioral problems and other adverse effects; and,

Whereas, Public health workers, other health professionals, community organizations, members of business and industry and all other interested citizens play a critical role in ensuring that all citizens - especially our children - have the opportunity to be healthy, productive people living in a lead-safe community; and,

Whereas, The Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention and Control Commission's purpose is to protect the citizens of Michigan, especially our young people, from the effects of lead.  As governor of the state of Michigan, I have been proud to sign strong legislation into law that has assisted in our efforts to safeguard the health and safety of the families and children of Michigan;

Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of October 25, 2009, Lead Poisoning Prevention and Awareness Month in Michigan.  I urge all citizens to become aware of the sources of lead poisoning and actions to prevent exposure and for public health professionals to form partnerships with communities to eliminate sources of exposure in a safe and effective manner in order to protect the health and welfare of Michigan citizens.
