Whereas, Egg farmers in the United States and the state of Michigan are committed to the safe, ethical and humane treatment of the animals in their care; and,
Whereas, The state of Michigan is home to members of the United Egg Producers (UEP), the nation's leading egg farming cooperative representing the majority of egg farmers in the United States; and,
Whereas, The United Egg Producers, working in partnership with an independent scientific advisory committee, which is comprised of the leading experts in veterinary medicine, animal behavior and food safety, developed the UEP Certified program for modern egg production; and,
Whereas, Egg farmers, who play an active role in their local communities and contribute significantly to state and local economies, have repeatedly demonstrated their concern for the hungry. The March 2009 egg donation Giveaway program delivered over 458,000 eggs to the food banks of Michigan and 12 million eggs to 92 food banks across the country;
Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2009, Michigan Egg Farmer Day in Michigan. I urge the residents of this state to recognize the members of the United Egg Producers for their contributions to the proper care of egg laying hens and to the people of the state of Michigan.
