Whereas, Inflammatory breast cancer is the most aggressive form of breast cancer and is characterized by very low survival rates and accounts for five to ten percent of all diagnosed breast cancers; and,
Whereas, Fifty percent of inflammatory breast cancer cases are fatal within five years and almost all within ten years; and,
Whereas, Rapid and accurate diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer is difficult due to the limited amount of pre-treatment tumor tissue available for examination; and,
Whereas, The research of inflammatory breast cancer is applicable not only for inflammatory breast cancers but for all other forms of metastasizing cancers as well; and,
Whereas, Lack of research has hampered advancements in early detection, treatment, and improved prognoses in patients; and,
Whereas, During the week of October 1, 2009, I encourage Michigan women to find out how they can maximize inflammatory breast cancer management by staying active, knowing their risk, understanding treatment options, and recognizing the need for increased research;
Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of October 1, 2009, Inflammatory Breast Cancer Week in Michigan. I encourage all Michigan women to learn more on how to prevent inflammatory breast cancer and to urge those at risk to obtain the advantage of early detection through routine checkups and good health.
