World Elder Abuse Day

Whereas, The safety and protection of vulnerable adults is critical to the well being of Michigan families; and,

Whereas, Elder abuse is a complex health and social problem involving arm or threatened harm to a senior citizen; and,

Whereas, Elder mistreatment is associated with increased morbidity and disability; and,

Whereas, It is estimated that 80,000 Michigan citizens aged 60 and older are victims of elder abuse; and,

Whereas, As the aging population increases, by the year 2010 Michigan could be faced with over 100,000 cases of elder abuse; and,

Whereas, Education can help to inform the public about the signs and risk of elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation; and,

Whereas, Efforts to identify, report, and investigate elder mistreatment are important in reducing the harm to Michigan seniors; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 15, 2006, as Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Michigan.  Together we can make Michigan a leader in the protection of older adults and can honor and value their contributions to Michigan’s past, present, and future.
