Trails and Greenways Month and Day

Whereas, It has become possible to “enrich America’s communities and countryside by creating a nationwide network of public trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors” thereby connecting these locations of Michigan; and,

Whereas, The “Discover Michigan Trail” links neighborhoods, cultural resources, natural and historical attractions, and schools; and,

Whereas, Trails provide an opportunity for recreation, community revitalization, increased tourism, and conservation of green space; and,

Whereas, A partnership was formed between the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, local governments, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Department of Transportation to make the “Discover Michigan Trail” a reality and, in turn, provide events such as the annual mountain bike tour and create volunteer opportunities; and,

Whereas, Residents and visitors are able to enjoy Michigan’s environment, distinctive communities, and historical landmarks through travel on this non-motorized transportation conduit; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 7, 2006, as Michigan Trails and Greenways Day and June 2006, as Trails and Greenways Month in Michigan.
