Anne Nolan: A Day in the Life

Anne Nolan is a Web Developer with Enterprise Web Development within Enterprise Application Services.  EAS is part of DIT’s Agency Services.  Anne came to DIT from the Department of Transportation, where she worked on that department’s website.  She started working for EWD half-time during the Michigan.gov migration, and was moved over full-time when DIT was created.

Anne has an extensive background in art.  She received her BA in Graphic Design from Michigan State University and an MFA in Printmaking from MSU a few years later.  Before she began working for the state, Anne taught art at Lansing Community College.  Her husband is also an artist and owns Grand Art Supply.  This art experience helps Anne in the design and creation of many web pages.  For instance, she is responsible for much of the design you see on TechTalk!  She has also worked on Transportation’s web page, and works closely with the Governor’s web staff to create and design the Executive Office’s many web sites.  More recently, she worked to create the Michigan Do-Not-Call page at www.michigan.gov/donotcall and the Governor’s Values Survey.

Anne says her favorite thing about her job is her job… every day is something different. She also enjoys her co-workers and working in team situations with them. Her biggest challenge, however, is keeping clients happy. She likes to be able to make website user's jobs easier, but sometimes that makes hers more challenging! Often, she gets assignments on short notice, and of course it would always be nicer to have more time. Anne explained that sometimes she is "requested to produce a product, but not given the raw materials. That seems to be the nature of Web development and the biggest frustration. You want to do the best site possible, but lack critical information from clients." That means that often people are concerned more with the look of a new website that the information contained within the site.

Another part of Anne’s job is helping the many webmasters and content authors with problems they encounter while maintaining various Michigan.gov web pages.  She runs some training and meetings, and fields many phone calls each day from users in need of her expertise.  Though people from all over DIT and other departments call her, she is the site contact mainly for DIT, Transportation, Agriculture, Corrections, Military/Veteran’s Affairs and the Governor’s Office.  Together with these content authors and site administrators, Anne works to ensure that the employees and citizens of Michigan have an excellent resource in the Michigan.gov web portal.
