Pat Malloy: A Day in the Life

Pat Malloy

Pat Malloy is a DIT employee who works as a Financial Applications Manager serving the Department of Treasury.  His main duty is to serve his clients – in this case, Treasury – and to ensure that their needs are being met.  Pat is responsible for all IT matters for Treasury's Financial Services Bureau.  This bureau handles the State's receipts processing, finance and accounting for Treasury and can be thought of as the State's bank account.  This means Pat could have to handle production problems, help the clients to prioritize their IT needs, or support MAIN, the state’s accounting system.  Pat also works with a variety of agencies outside of DIT or Treasury.  He has ongoing projects with DMB, DCH Accounting, Education, the Office of Retirement Services and HRMN.

Much of the work Pat does is as a project manager.  He leads project teams and says he is fortunate in that most of the folks he works with are “good, progressive thinkers.”  Recently, Pat wrapped up work on the Motor Fuel Automation Project, which put the motor fuel filing system into a web interface and electronic payments.  Only a few other states have implemented such a system.  So far, this project has returned almost $22 million to the state.  He is also currently working on the CEPAS project.

Pat says his favorite thing about his job is the people.  “The people you work with make all the difference,” he commented.  He works daily with both Treasury and DIT employees.

Having worked for Treasury for 15 years before DIT was created, Pat knows the ins and outs of being a state employee.  He says the biggest challenge he faces right now is one so many other state employees are dealing with – having to do more with fewer resources.  A big change he faced when starting with DIT was to learn how to communicate with different people, and to understand his new department’s mission.

Before he came to the state, Pat was a Board of Water & Light employee.  He graduated from Alfred College in New York and also from Ferris State University here in Michigan.  He also has his Master’s Certificate In Project Management from George Washington University.  In his spare time, Pat devotes a lot of his time to youth baseball as a coach and as a coordinator of the Mid-Michigan Pony League.  He also plays guitar in a band called Mystic Shake, which is popular around Lansing and East Lansing… you may have seen Pat play at various coffee houses or East Lansing city functions.

Thank you, Pat, for all your hard work and dedication to DIT!
