Fall at the Capitol Fellow Employees:

As we prepare to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with our families and friends, I would like to take just a moment to extend a special note of thanks to you.

I know this has been a particularly difficult year for many employees. Following last year’s early retirement program, state employee ranks were left depleted, while you who remained to serve our state have been asked to do more with less. On top of those challenges, the state’s fiscal crisis has demanded even more of you.

When I first joined the State of Michigan organization five years ago as the State’s Attorney General, I was deeply and immediately impressed by the passion and commitment of the state’s employees. In the years since, my respect and admiration for the work that state employees do on behalf of our citizens has only grown. The decision to ask the very men and women who serve as the heart and the muscle of our organization to forgo even a small portion of your pay was among the most difficult I have made this first year in office.

Perhaps equally challenging for me, personally, has been my inability to speak to you directly during our discussions with your labor representatives. My personal choice would have been to speak to you frankly about the importance and power of your sacrifice. The law, however, prohibits such direct conversation while discussions were ongoing.

Today, I am grateful to be able to finally thank you – not just for your sacrifice – but for enabling our state to continue serving our citizens in such powerful ways each day.

Your sacrifice is a gift not to me, but to the people of Michigan. And I will continue to sing your praises everywhere I go. I will continue to remind our citizens that you are the men and women who ensure our children are safe in their schools and daycare centers; that you are working to ensure that their resources and crops are protected; that you are helping our neediest citizens and making our roads safe. In short, I will continue to remind them of all you do on their behalf.

At this time of giving thanks, and always, I applaud you and wish you much joy with your family this weekend and throughout the holidays.

Sincerely,

Jennifer M. Granholm
Governor
