Recently, the Legislature took action on the state budget, averting a government shutdown.  While the constitutional deadline for having a budget at the start of the new fiscal year was met with a 30-day continuation budget, the work on the 2010 budget is far from over. 

 I think we can all agree that the state must live within its means and that cuts are necessary.  I will be carefully examining the budget sent to me by the Legislature with the goal of protecting the things that are most important to Michigan's families and Michigan's future.  With our state's future on the line, we cannot afford a budget that does anything less.  I am determined to give the people of Michigan a fiscally sound budget with the right priorities. 

 This budget is more than just numbers - it is a vision for Michigan's future.  A future that demands a budget that will help us diversify our economy, attract new investment, create new jobs, keep police officers and firefighters on the job and on our streets, help our children afford a college education, and protect people at risk during these tough economic times.  Producing a budget that is right for Michigan is our challenge, and it is a challenge that we will meet.

 I know it has been especially difficult the past few weeks with the specter of a government shutdown looming over our heads.  I am writing today to tell you how deeply I appreciate your unparalleled service, your commitment to the people of Michigan, and your own personal sacrifice in these challenging times.  I know these are anxious times, but I hope we can stay strong and recommit to the vision we share for Michigan.
