Dear Colleagues:

I have written to you in the past about my passion for innovation, and I have encouraged each of you to find new and better ways of doing the state's business. As gas prices continue to soar and with everyone looking for more affordable ways to get by in a struggling economy, I have charged my Cabinet with finding creative alternatives for getting our work done.

I recently asked each department how many of you participate in some sort of alternative work schedule, and I am pleased to report that more than a third of our workforce currently participates in some type of alternative work schedule. Michigan is clearly a leader in providing flexibility for our employees, but I know we can do even more.

We are currently working on ways to help state employees save commuting dollars through more flexible work schedules, including four-day work weeks, telecommuting, and additional commuter resources. While I know that the nature of the job and the needs of certain customers prevent telecommuting and flex schedules from being a viable option for every position in state government, it does make sense for many positions. I have asked the directors of each department to support the spirit of flexibility and innovation. I know we can find additional opportunities to do our work in different settings and through alternative work schedules while still providing Michigan citizens with the excellence and service they expect and deserve from their state government.

You will be receiving further communication in the near future from your respective departments about flexible work schedules, telecommuting, and additional commuter resources. In the meantime, you can find various tips and suggestions for getting the most from your vehicle at http://connect.michigan.gov/portal/site/ogwd . Just click on "$$ Saving Gas Tips" at the top of the page for a tip sheet entitled Save Money and Ease Your Pain at the Pump, developed by the Office of Great Workplace Development in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Transportation .

I want to again thank you for your hard work and dedication to the people of Michigan.

Sincerely,
Jennifer M. Granholm
