Dear Colleague:
Next week marks the state's annual observance of Employee Appreciation Week. I know it may seem challenging to talk about "appreciation" in such difficult times, but I think it is exactly the right time, because the dire economic situation facing our state clearly demonstrates that your role in state government is invaluable; we cannot serve the people of Michigan without you.
Because there are so many questions about how our estimated $700 million budget shortfall might affect you, I want to speak to you directly. I invite you to join me at one of the following locations to discuss the issues facing us:
Governor's State of Michigan Employee Budget Information Sessions
May 7
12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Detroit Cadillac Place, Main Floor, Showroom
May 8
12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Capitol Commons Center, 400 S. Pine Street, Lower Level Conference Room
Unfortunately, I cannot solve our budget crisis alone. Though I have proposed a balanced budget that would protect health care, education, and the work you do to provide those and many more services to the state's citizens, this budget crisis can only be resolved with the cooperation of the Legislature. Without a responsible solution to the budget deficit from the Legislature, the state will be forced to take swift action to immediately balance the budget. And that action could interrupt, or in some cases, end the important work we do in state government.
I hope you will join with me in pushing the Legislature for immediate, balanced, responsible action to resolve our budget deficit - without drastic, short-sighted cuts to the services you are providing Michigan's citizens.
Again, thank you for your dedicated service to the citizens of Michigan. I hope you are able to join me next week.
Sincerely,
Jennifer M. Granholm
Governor
