Whereas, The citizens of Michigan have the right to know how public officials are representing them and spending their tax dollars; and,
Whereas, Under the Freedom of Information Act, government agencies must provide the public with access to government information, unless the information falls under certain exemptions; and,
Whereas, Beginning the week of March 13, 2005, journalism organizations across the nation will campaign to press for government access, this effort has been dubbed “Sunshine Week”; and,
Whereas, The democratic process is built upon the rights of citizens to question and hold their elected officials accountable on their actions and motives while they are representing them; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan to hereby proclaim the week of March 13, 2005, as Sunshine Week in Michigan.
