Whereas, Every year, thousands of people and businesses are victimized by identity
theft schemes, and,
Whereas, The liberty of better communication and knowledge acquisition has
been aided by the advent of computer and internet access however there is also
an unfortunate abuse of personal information and identity theft, and,
Whereas, Computer technology and Internet access is rapidly rising, so also
is access to personal information; therefore practicing effective information
security measures is crucial for all citizens are able to contribute to the
protection of our national information infrastructure, and,
Whereas, This year the Postal Inspection Service and the Consumer Advocate’s
office of the U. S. Postal Service have joined other federal, state, and local
organizations, as well as national advocacy groups to launch the fifth annual
National Consumer Protection Week, and,
Whereas, During National Consumer Protection Week, all residents of the state
of Michigan are encouraged to ensure the security of their personal or sensitive
information, and,
Whereas, The continued financial security and prosperity of our state and even
our country is strengthened when consumers learn to safeguard their information
and personal data, and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That February 7, 2003, be known as Consumer Protection Day
in the State of Michigan as part of National Consumer Protection Week.
