Lakes Appreciation Month

Whereas , Water is Michigan's most significant resource, providing our state with economic and social benefits such as tourism, fishing, manufacturing, and agriculture; and,

Whereas , Michigan is known for its Great Lakes which together contain one-fifth of the world's surface fresh water and is home to some 11,000 inland lakes and ponds as well as more than 36,000 miles of rivers and streams; and,

Whereas , It is in the interest of all who enjoy the use of Michigan's waterways to increase public awareness of current water-related issues, including the presence of invasive species in the Great Lakes; and,

Whereas , The responsibility for protecting and restoring the quality of Michigan's lakes, land, and wildlife lies with all residents, communities, municipalities, businesses, tribes, and visitors; and,

Whereas , The state of Michigan recognizes the need to protect its lakes, ponds, and rivers so that future generations may enjoy them; and now therefore be it,

Resolved , That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 2008 as Lakes Appreciation Month in Michigan, and I encourage all citizens to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of Michigan's lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams and the quality of life they support.
