Whereas , American citizenship guarantees each individual certain rights and privileges and carries with it considerable responsibilities; and throughout our nation's history, Americans have willingly answered the call to protect freedom and liberty on foreign shores and have inspired other nations in their quest to assure freedom in their own lands; and,
Whereas , On June 25, 1950, the North Korea communist army invaded South Korea, initiating the Korean War, which was brought to an end on July 27, 1953, primarily through the efforts of the United States Armed Forces with the assistance of 22 other nations; and,
Whereas , Members of our Armed Forces have brought great honor to our nation and have given true meaning to the highest standard of patriotism and service; and,
Whereas, Approximately 5.7 million American servicemen and women served during the Korean War to prevent the spread of communism in Korea and throughout the world, and of these brave men and women, 132,000 currently reside in Michigan; and,
Whereas , One thousand four hundred and fifty-six Michigan residents were killed in combat and 368 are listed as missing in action or prisoners of war; and,
Whereas , During the Korean War, our servicemen and women made great sacrifices in the name of freedom; and today, members of our armed forces remain vigilant in protecting the rights of the citizens of South Korea; and,
Whereas, All Americans should remember the ultimate sacrifice made by our countrymen and women who fought in Korea for the noble and just cause we Americans cherish - freedom; and,
Whereas , On the 55th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, the people of the state of Michigan recognize those who served our country during that conflict and all who have worn an American uniform in defense of this great country; and now therefore be it,
Resolved , That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 27, 2008, as 55th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Commemoration Day in Michigan.
