Childhood Drowning Awareness Month

Whereas , According to the Drowning Prevention Foundation, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children, particularly those age five and under; and,

 

Whereas , Children are more likely to drown in the backyard pool as opposed to the open waters of beaches and lakes; and,

Whereas , Adults should closely watch young children playing in or near any body of water, backyard pool, public pool, or bathtub; and,

Whereas , A child should never be left unattended near water at large gatherings or while an adult attends to the telephone, doorbell, or does chores; and,

Whereas , Through public awareness, the state of Michigan seeks to minimize the devastating effects of drowning among all Michigan residents; and now therefore be it,

Resolved , That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 2008 as Childhood Drowning Awareness Month in Michigan.
