Whereas , The Clean Beaches Council, as part of Great Outdoors Month, has designated the week beginning June 30, 2008, as National Clean Beaches Week; and,
Whereas , Michigan communities and government have undertaken significant measures to keep our beaches clean and safe; and,
Whereas, Beaches represent a critical part of our natural heritage and a beautiful part of the American landscape; and
Whereas, Beaches are sensitive ecosystems, susceptible to degradation and alteration from climate change, erosion, natural forces, untreated sewage, litter, and improper use; and
Whereas , Some 180 million Americans make nearly two billion trips annually to beaches and contribute significantly to the local, state, and national economy; and,
Whereas , Seventy-five percent of all recreational activity occurs within a half-mile corridor around the shorelines of our oceans, lakes, and rivers; and,
Whereas , Coastal tourism and healthy, fresh sea food fuel robust economies, sustaining communities and supporting jobs in states with freshwater and saltwater coasts; and now therefore be it,
Resolved , That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of June 30, 2008, as National Clean Beaches Week in Michigan and I encourage all citizens to visit, enjoy, and protect Michigan's great beaches.
