Whereas , Michigan is a community in which an estimated 1.7 million adults age 60 and older make their home; and,
Whereas , It has been estimated that 1 in 5 older adults are abused, neglected or exploited; and,
Whereas , Abuse of older adults is an increasing occurrence that crosses all socio-economic segments of the population; and,
Whereas , We are all responsible for creating safer communities for Michigan's older adults; and,
Whereas , Combating abuse of older adults will help improve the quality of life for Michigan seniors, and allow them to live as independently and dynamically as possible; and,
Whereas , Michigan's older adults should be treated with dignity and respect for their significant contributions to the betterment of our state; and now therefore be it,
Resolved , That, I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 15, 2008, as Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and the week of June 16, 208, as Elder Abuse Awareness Week in Michigan.
