LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments:
Michigan Board of Acupuncture
- Jay Abel-Horowitz, M.D. of Franklin, physician in private practice, is reappointed to represent licensed physicians for a term expiring June 30, 2013.
- Leonard D. Wright, M.D. of Muskegon, practitioner with Saint Mary's Wege Institute, is reappointed to represent licensed physicians for a term expiring June 30, 2013.
The Michigan Board of Acupuncture, created in 2006, consults with the Department of Public Health on the promulgation of the department's rules regarding standards for registration as an acupuncturist.
These reappointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Board of Audiology
- Lari Korpela of Livonia, audiologist at Metropolitan Speech and Hearing Center, is reappointed to represent audiologists for a term expiring June 30, 2013.
The Michigan Board of Audiology was created pursuant to Public Act 97 of 2004 and is responsible for overseeing the licensure and regulation of audiologists, including establishing specific requirements for licensure.
This reappointment is subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Controlled Substances Advisory Commission
- Darnarius Hemphill of Detroit, inventory management specialist of TACOM (Department of Defense), is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring August 30, 2009, and reappointed for a term expiring August 30, 2011. He succeeds Bradley E. Meisling who has resigned.
- Dennis Smith of Marquette, president & CEO of Upper Peninsula Health Plan, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring August 30, 2009, and reappointed for a term expiring August 30, 2011. He succeeds Howard S. Wolpin who has resigned.
The Controlled Substances Advisory Commission is responsible for monitoring indicators of controlled substance abuse and diversion and recommending a plan of action for overcoming such abuse and diversion.
These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Board of Counseling
- Robbie J. Steward, Ph.D. of Okemos, professor and director of the master's counseling program at Michigan State University, is reappointed to represent individuals engaged primarily in teaching, training or research in counseling for a term expiring June 30, 2013.
- Marion D. Turowski of Troy, owner of Somerset Counseling Center P.C., is reappointed to represent individuals engaged primarily in the administration of counseling services for a term expiring June 30, 2013.
The Michigan Board of Counseling is responsible for the licensure of professional counselors of the state prior to their entry into the practice of counseling. The board also has the authority to take disciplinary action against licensees who have adversely affected the public's health, safety and welfare.
These reappointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Hepatitis C Advisory Task Force
- Edward Goldman of Ann Arbor, deputy general counsel for the University of Michigan, is reappointed to represent the legal community for a term expiring June 30, 2010.
- Calvin Trent, Ph.D. of Detroit, director of the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, is reappointed to represent state and local government for a term expiring June 30, 2010.
The Hepatitis C Advisory Task Force consists of 11 members from groups that are informed on, or affected by, the risk of Hepatitis C. The task force is charged with advising the governor and the Legislature on policies regarding hepatitis C and risk reduction and reviewing and identifying potential additional funding mechanisms and sources to cover the costs of outreach, awareness, available treatment options, and testing for HCV.
These reappointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Board of Examiners in Mortuary Science
- John Desmond of Troy, manager of Pixley Funeral Home, is reappointed to represent professionals for a term expiring June 30, 2013.
- Stephen Kemp of Bloomfield Hills, director and manager of Haley Funeral Directors, is reappointed to represent professionals for a term expiring June 30, 2013.
- Father Russell Kohler of Detroit, pastor of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 30, 2013.
The Board of Examiners in Mortuary Science provides for the licensure and regulation of mortuary science practitioners, sets qualifications and examination requirements, and provides penalties for violation of the act.
These reappointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Board of Massage Therapy
- Karen Armstrong of Farmington Hills, supervisor of clinical massage in the William Beaumont Hospital Integrative Medicine Department and program director of the William Beaumont Hospital School of Oncology/Hospital Massage, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2012.
- Timothy Bograkos of Lansing, assistant to director of regional giving at Spartan Fund and young alumni coordinator for the Michigan State University Alumni Association, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2012.
- Mary Ericson of Plymouth, massage therapist with Bodyworks Healing Center, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2011.
- Tiffany Hartung of Warren, associate regional representative for the Sierra Club, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2011.
- Dennis Hilton-Scheffler of Mount Clemens, owner and instructor at Healing Hands Health Center School of Massage, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2011.
- Bilky Joda-Miller of Lansing, owner and massage therapist for All Body Kneads, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2013.
- Jodi Kubizna of Grand Rapids, owner and instructor at Functional Innovative Therapy and Training, LLC, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2012.
- Thomas Mackowiak of Lansing, staff athletic trainer for Michigan State University athletics and adjunct faculty with the Michigan State University Department of Kinesiology, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2012.
- Hal Rudnianin of Hancock, director and instructor for Institute of Natural Therapies, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2013.
- Michael Ryan of Marquette, owner and director of Marquette Massage, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2013.
- Amanda West of Holt, associate with Capitol Fundraising Associates, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2013.
The Michigan Board of Massage Therapy, created by Section 17955 of 2008 PA 471 within the Department of Community Health, is charged with issuing licenses to applicants, providing an examination to applicants that measures entry level competence, and to promulgating rules to create a code of ethics.
These appointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Board of Occupational Therapists
- Britt R. Lenfield of Ada, director of professional services for the Spectrum Health Visiting Nurse Association, is appointed to represent occupational therapists for a term expiring December 31, 2010. She succeeds Barbara Hemphill who has resigned.
The Michigan Board of Occupational Therapists provides for the registration of occupational therapists and occupational therapist assistants.
This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Board of Pharmacy
- Ilene Hartman-Abramson, Ph.D. of Novi, adjunct professor at Lawrence Technological University, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 30, 2011. She succeeds Edward Rivet who has resigned.
- Dhafer Almaklani of Dearborn, pharmacy manager and legal resource with Target Corp., is appointed to represent pharmacists for a term expiring June 30, 2013. He succeeds Laura Shaw whose term has expired.
- Pamela Bufe-Wyett of Bloomfield Hills, president of TPA Consultants, LLC, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 30, 2013. She succeeds Leigh Kegerreis whose term has expired.
The Michigan Board of Pharmacy is responsible for the licensure and examination of pharmacists; licensure of pharmacies, manufacturers and wholesale distributors; and the regulation of drugs manufactured, distributed, prescribed, dispensed and administered in the state.
This reappointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Quality Community Care Council Board of Directors
- Eric Thomas of Flint, advocate for the Genesee Regional Interagency Consumer Committee and president of Miscellaneous Records Inc., is appointed to represent consumer advocates for a term expiring June 17, 2013. He succeeds Kathy McGeathy whose term has expired.
- Sara Harrison of Lansing, civic volunteer, is reappointed to represent consumers for a term expiring June 17, 2013.
The QCCC is charged with promoting and coordinating effective and efficient personal assistance services, including the objective of creating and maintaining one or more registries of providers in designated Michigan communities.
These appointments are not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
Michigan Board of Speech Language Pathology
- Brit Austin of Oxford, speech-language pathologist with EBS Health Care and Rainbow Rehab & Total Rehabilitation Services, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2010.
- Judith Brown Clarke, Ph.D. of Lansing, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Inclusion with the Michigan State University College of Communication Arts and Sciences, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2013.
- Frances Eldis, Ph.D. of Redford, adjunct assistant professor with the Wayne State University Department of Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2010.
- Ellen Fairbrother of Southfield, speech-language pathologist and president of Accent Reduction, Inc., is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2011.
- Thomas Koepke, Ph.D. of Clinton Township, director of Special Education Management Services with the Macomb Intermediate School District, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2012.
- Jeanette Meyer, M.D. of Kalamazoo, medical director of the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) with CentraCare, is appointed to represent physicians for a term expiring December 31, 2012.
- Donna Riccio Omichinski of Ann Arbor, research area specialist associate with the Social Science, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department of University of Michigan Medical School, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2011.
- Lizbeth Stevens, Ph.D. of Berkley, associate professor and speech-language pathology graduate coordinator at Eastern Michigan University, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2012.
- Katie Strong of East Lansing, faculty specialist with the Michigan State University Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders and private practitioner with Strong Speech Consulting Inc., is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2011.
- Timothy Weise of Grosse Ile, director of rehabilitation therapies at Garden City Hospital, is appointed to represent professionals for a term expiring December 31, 2013.
The Michigan Board of Speech Language Pathology, created by Section 17605 of 2008 PA 524 within the Department of Community Health, is charged with overseeing the issuance of licenses to applicants, promulgate rules, and prescribing continuing education and disciplinary action.
These appointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports
- Patricia L. Ball of Bloomfield Hills, director of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 30, 2010. She succeeds Kevin C. Bush who has resigned.
- Kathryn C. Hulteen of East Lansing, office manager for Capital City Vision, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 30, 2011.
- Geraldine Jackson of Detroit, retiree of the Detroit Department of Recreation, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 30, 2011.
- Linda Jimenez of Brownstown, president and CEO of VIDA Enterprise, Inc., is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 30, 2011.
- Florine Mark of Farmington Hills, president and chairman of the board for The Weight Watchers Group, Inc., is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 30, 2011.
- Shanna J. Mueller of Northville, director of Powerhouse Gyms International Public Relations & Foundation, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 30, 2011.
- First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern of Lansing, is re-designated to serve as the honorary vice-chairperson of the council for a term expiring June 6, 2010.
- Terry-Ann Smythe of Houghton, fitness director of Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 30, 2011.
- Kimberlydawn Wisdom, M.D., M.S. of Southfield, state surgeon general, is re-designated to serve as the honorary chairperson of the council for a term expiring June 6, 2010.
- Mary A. Zatina of Detroit, senior vice president of government relations, corporate planning and communications of Oakwood Healthcare, Inc., is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 30, 2011.
The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports is charged with coordinating and developing a statewide physical fitness and health program. The council has undertaken a number of initiatives and partnered with several organizations to carry out their goals; some notable events are the annual "Walk to School Day" and partnering with the Michigan Parks and Recreation Association for "Walk Michigan."
These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
