United Solar's solar laminates to produce 15.1 million kWh of renewable energy annually for world's largest rooftop
LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that Michigan-based Energy Conversion Devices' (ECD)UNI-SOLAR® thin-film flexible solar laminates will power the world's largest rooftop solar power system. More than 85,000 UNI-SOLAR laminates will be installed on General Motor's (GM) assembly plant in Figueruelas, Zaragoza, Spain this fall to complete the 12 MW PV system.
The solar power system is built, owned and operated by VEOLIA Environment, world leader in environmental services and very active in Michigan, and Clairvoyant Energy S.L., the solar energy developer, with the participation of the Aragon government. When fully operational, the UNI-SOLAR solar laminates used to power the system will be capable of producing about 15 million kWh of "green" power annually, which is sufficient to power 4,500 homes.
"Michigan's renewable energy technology will soon be showcased across the globe with this installation of Energy Conversion Devices' thin-film solar rooftop power system on General Motors' facility in Zaragoza," said Governor Granholm. "Both companies demonstrate Michigan values, ECD for its leadership in solar and GM for its dedication to technological advancements, social responsibility and sustainability. Together, they illustrate Michigan's future as a global center for alternative energy excellence."
"Governor Granholm, the state of Michigan, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation have been strong supporters of alternative energy development and of Energy Conversion Devices. We are pleased that with the state's help, we are growing as a company and contributing to the growth of the alternative energy industry in Michigan," said Mark Morelli, president and CEO of Energy Conversion Devices.
