January 26, 2004

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced three appointments to the Michigan Travel Commission.  The commission is responsible for assisting Travel Michigan in developing a comprehensive, long-range vision for tourism.  Travel Michigan is an agency housed within the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) that promotes tourism within the state of Michigan.  Named to the commission are:

Tanya Heidelberg-Yopp of Wayne County, president of Motown Center, the new music museum located in downtown Detroit.  Ms. Heidelberg-Yopp is appointed to represent the private sector for a term expiring August 20, 2007.  She succeeds Andy McLemore, Jr. whose term has expired.

Frank Taylor of Northville Township, president of Sweet Georgia Brown, Detroit’s newest premier restaurant.  Mr. Taylor is appointed to represent small businesses in the private sector for a term expiring August 20, 2007.  He succeeds Daniel J. Trotochaud whose term has expired.

W. Brett Shelton of Tecumseh, president of the Michigan International Speedway located in Brooklyn.  Mr. Shelton is appointed to represent the private sector for a term expiring August 20, 2007.  He succeeds Todd V. Callewaert whose term has expired.

“These are three successful and talented business people who will be invaluable to Travel Michigan,” said Granholm.  “Their knowledge and expertise will help the tourism industry in Michigan move forward, and I am grateful for their willingness to serve.”

"Brett Shelton is an excellent choice for the Travel Commission,” said State Senator Mark Schauer.  “As president of MIS, he knows first hand the critical link between tourism and economic growth for our region and state."

These appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
