New Program to Promote Wellness for Mentors and Mentees

LANSING – Running the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day just ahead of approximately 50,000 walkers who annually make the trek is an exciting opportunity given to 300 Michigan runners from across the state each year.  In 2006, mentor teams from across Michigan will also be invited to join the run.

“The partnership between an adult mentor and youth mentee has provided a positive role model in the life of thousands of Michigan children,” said First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern.   “This program will encourage a wellness component as part of that relationship by providing an opportunity for 15 to 20 mentor/mentee teams to run the bridge on Labor Day.”

Mulhern serves as chair of the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) which directs Mentor Michigan and serves as the honorary vice chair of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports.

The program, Mentoring:  A Running Start, will match an honorary coach with each mentor team.  Teams will receive training, running shoes, a trip to Mackinac Island, including accommodations at Mission Point Resort and a tour of the Mackinac Bridge.  The honorary coaches will provide sponsorship for their team’s training and travel during the summer training process.  Sponsors include Michigan State Medical Society, Michigan Health and Hospital Association, Michigan Education Special Services Association, General Motors Foundation, and the Detroit Lions.  Training support is being provided by the YMCA, Michigan’s Olympic community, the Crim Festival of Races and other running organizations.

For more information, or to apply online, go to the Governor’s Council website at www.michiganfitness.org.  The deadline for applying is May 22 at 5 p.m.
