Why do slot machines malfunction?

Slot machines are normally operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Like any machine or computerized device, occasionally slot machine components will break down and require service. Malfunctions can occur for a variety of reasons including hardware failures, power failures, memory failures, program errors, and vandalism or tampering. When a slot machine malfunctions, it is no longer operating as it was designed and may display unwanted or erratic behavior.
