Little Brevort Lake

Recognition: Legally Dedicated Natural Area Little Brevort Lake Scenic Site location map
Size: 542 acres
Management: Lake Superior State Forest
Location: 20 miles NW of St. Ignace on Route 2
Activities: Camping (adjacent), wildflowers, hiking, non-motorized fishing, bird watching, photography
Importance:
The lake is the remnant embayment of a much higher post glacial stage of Lake Michigan, and sits 45 feet above the present lake level. A series of old, forested sand dunes forms an irregular ridge along the south edge of the area. The wooded areas include nearly every timber type and tree species common to northern Michigan, including two large hemlock trees estimated to be over 500 years old. Large numbers of wildflowers bloom each spring in the southeast portion of the area.
