Policies and Procedures

The Archives of Michigan reserves the right to deny the reproduction of any of its holdings due to preservation concerns for a particular item. Each type of reproduction has its own set of policies and procedures. Please read them carefully before making a request. Fees are subject to change.

Photocopies

Photocopying of copy-print material is allowed. However, due to preservation concerns, photocopying of original format images such as daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, cartes de visite, stereographs, cabinet cards, cyanotypes and albumen prints is not allowed.

Professional Photographic Prints

Copy prints are made from an Epson Stylus 2200 photographic printer. Order completion typically takes two to three weeks.  Information on the back of prints will not be transferred unless a copy is requested. See the price list for costs.

High Resolution Digital Photographic Files

High resolution scans are available for reproduction.  Unless otherwise instructed, files are scanned at 100%, 400ppi, .tif format.  Images are burned to a CD-R for delivery to the customer.  Due to limits on network memory, we cannot e-mail files over 1.44MB.  See the price list for costs.

Audio Tapes

Archives staff will make copies for patrons up to but not exceeding five tapes per week. Patrons will be billed $5.00 per cassette. Patrons may review tapes with headphones in the reading room at a reasonable decibel level that does not disturb other researchers.

Motion Picture Film

VHS and 16mm film can be reproduced onto VHS cassettes through a local vendor approved by the Archives of Michigan. Cost varies with the vendor, but typical charges equal $20.00 for 15 minutes of footage including the cost of the blank VHS cassette. Orders are generally completed in two weeks.

Microfilm

Microfilm preserved in the Archives of Michigan is available for reproduction. Orders can be made by calling (517) 373-1408. Microfilm produced by the Genealogical Society of Utah and preserved in the Archives of Michigan is not available for reproduction through these methods. Please call for further information.
