Location

The Sanilac Petroglyphs historic site is located near Bad Axe. Take M-53 to Bay City-Forestville Road and proceed east to Germania Road. Head south one-half mile on Germania; the site is on the west side of the road.

Admission

Admission to the Sanilac Petroglyphs is free. A Michigan state parks motor-vehicle permit is not required for entry.

2009 Season Dates and Hours

Due to State of Michigan budget reductions, the Sanilac Petroglyphs Historic Site is closed until further notice. However, walking trails at the park remain open.

June 20—your one chance to see the petroglyphs this year!

How Much Time?

Please allow two hours to tour the Sanilac Petroglyphs. Attractions include the petroglyphs and a mile-long, self-guided walking trail featuring peaceful forests, the remains of a 19th-century logging camp and a 110-year-old white pine. Group tours are available by advance reservation. See a map of the site.

Pets: Pets accompanied by and under the control of their human friends are welcomed on the grounds of this site. Pets may not enter any building. For further information, please refer to the DNR web page, Pets in State Park Campgrounds.

Accessibility

Our thanks to the DNR Parks and Recreation Division for installing a spaciously wide layer of crushed limestone on the trail connecting the parking lot and the archaeological site. (Visitors will first encounter 12 feet of lawn and then reach the trail, which runs approximately 900 feet to the pavilion.) The trail now has the feel and functionality of concrete, providing greater accessibility for people with mobility impairments. (Partial funding courtesy Michigan History Foundation.)

Thanks to a Thumb Area Boy Scout troop, two benches offer visitors a place to rest along the hiking trail.
