Aerial Imagery ArchiveMichigan DNR's Digital Aerial Imagery Archive of USGS Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles (DOQs)
The Michigan DNR provides free online access to aerial imagery pictures through this page, which you can view or download to your computer. The DNR holds and serves copies of aerial images developed under a national program administered by the U.S. Geological Survey, done cooperatively with the Michigan DNR. Currently this page serves two sets of DOQ images for Michigan, acquired during two time periods beginning in 1992 and then in 1998.
To view these DOQs, you need a specialty viewer (similar to how you need Adobe Reader to view publications in PDF formats). All images downloaded from this site are in MrSID format, so they are smaller files and load faster. In addition to using your own special software for various GIS and CAD packages, these MrSID files can be displayed with three free options: (a.) a web browser plug-in tool which uses your own web browser software (the LizardTech ExpressView Browser Plug-in was formerly called the MrSid Browser Plug-in); (b.) a free stand-alone viewer tool (the LizardTech GeoExpress Viewer); or (c.) a free stand-alone pocket PC or mobile device viewer (must be WinCE compliant ; the LizardTech ExpressView for PocketPC Viewer). All three options are available as free downloads from LizardTech, Inc. (now a Celartem Company; www.lizardtech.com).
