The Michigan Natural Resources Commission will meet on Thursday, Sept. 10, in Lansing. The commission will meet at the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health (DCPAH) located at 4125 Beaumont Rd. on the Michigan State University campus, Lansing. All meetings are open to the public.

Prior to the full business meeting, certain policy committees of the commission will meet. All meetings are open to the public.

At 10 a.m., the NRC Policy Committee on Technology, Information, Marketing and Education will meet in the Demmer Classroom of the new John and Marnie Demmer Shooting Sports Education and Training Center, located nearby at 3365 E. Jolly Rd. in Lansing. The committee will learn more about the new facility and the partnerships that made it possible, and have a discussion about the Department of Natural Resources' interest in building partnerships for current and future projects.

At 12:15 p.m., the NRC Policy Committee on Finance and Administration will meet at the DCPAH to review the 2010 Fiscal Year Budget (dependent on legislative action), the DNR's monthly spend plan, projected fund balances for the current fiscal year that ends on Sept. 30, and receive an update on the DNR internal single audit.

At 1:30 p.m., the NRC Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries will meet at the DCPAH. The committee will review proposed fisheries and wildlife regulations, a technical amendment for DNR managed waterfowl areas, have a presentation on the firearm deer season opening date, a tribal update and discuss regulations for tracking wounded deer.

At 3 p.m., the NRC Committee of the Whole will meet to discuss the action items before DNR Director Rebecca Humphries on the meeting agenda, receive a legislative update, receive a presentation on the DNR Law Enforcement Division, and an update regarding the naming of a state park.

Public appearances before the Commission begin at 4:30 p.m. Persons wishing to make public comments to the NRC should sign up with Teresa Gloden, executive assistant to the Commission, by contacting Gloden at the meeting site to sign up to speak.

Action items being considered by the NRC at this meeting include a wildlife conservation order reflecting the current state of wolf management in Michigan, and two proposed state trail acquisitions for the Interlochen to Kaleva Trail in Manistee County and the Musketawa Trail in Ottawa and Kent counties.

Action items before DNR Director Humphries include the renewal of several fishing regulations including special fishing regulations for the Big Island Lakes Complex in Schoolcraft County, regulations regarding waters open to burbot netting, waters threatened by excessive fish mortalities and state-licensed commercial fishing. Humphries also will consider the authorization of several land transactions.
