The following activities will be offered throughout the day for school children of all ages. Teachers (3rd-6th grades) may choose one of the following programs for your class when you arrive at the center; all programs will run 30 minutes.
The emphasis is on conservation and stewardship of our natural resources in Michigan. To register, please call (734) 475-3170.
These programs are free to all participants. All school buses will have free entry into the park. Private vehicles will be required to have a motor vehicle permit. The daily permit is $6.
Birding for Beginners (9 a.m.-10 a.m. only)
Observe birds from our deck overlooking Mill Lake and take a walk on nearby trails to observe some of the many species of birds residing in and migrating back to the park. We will provide binoculars and discuss some of the characteristics to look for in identifying birds.
Forest Ecology
Hike to a forested area along the trail to observe the habitat and its unique wildlife and plant life. Interrelationships of the forest ecosystem will be addressed, along with forest layers, photosynthesis and nonnative species.
Wetland Ecology
During this program your class will visit three unique wetlands. Each community will be observed in terms of hydrology, soil, plants and wildlife.
Native Prairie Habitats
Visit our prairie demonstration area, and see some of our prairie plants realizing that historically much of Waterloo was prairie habitat. What are the unique characteristics of a prairie?
Rockin' On the Rock Walkway
Geologic landscapes are the foundation of all our habitats. Join the staff geologist taking a walk through geologic time to discover fossils, minerals, rocks and how they were formed.
Outdoor Sights and Sounds
(for children 5-7 yrs.) at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Use your sense of hearing and sight to identify what is happening in the great outdoors.
Alien Invaders
Michigan's natural communities are greatly troubled by invasive species, such as autumn olive and purple loosestrife that can ruin native habitats. Learn about some of these species (plants and animals) and what can you do to stop them.
Recycling Relay and Recycling Station (ongoing)
Recycle your lunch containers and run a recycling relay to help conserve our natural resources!
