Agency: Natural Resources

Come join us on one of the volunteer stewardship work days at Bald Mountain Recreation Areaand Highland Recreation Area. Volunteers are needed in these locations to join the State Park Stewardship Teamand organized friends groups to restore some of the special, but threatened, habitats in these state parks.

The Friends of Bald Mountain Recreation Areaneed volunteers every second Saturday of the month to help restore the Graham Lake Fen Complex by cutting and piling the invasive shrubs such as buckthorn and autumn olive. This unique prairie fen complex is one of the few remaining in Michigan today. It is threatened by altered hydrology, natural fire suppression and the invasion of these non-native plants. All volunteers must register with the volunteer day leader. Please contact Curt Winter at 248-814-8589 or by e-mail at curt_winter@hotmail.com. Please remember to bring appropriate clothing for outdoor work, boots, gloves, eye protection and drinking water. Activities are best suited to those 15 years or older.

The Highland Field Trial Grounds Association need volunteers on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help restore the prairie and oak barren communities of the field trialing area. Lunch is provided. Volunteers are needed to cut and remove invasive trees and shrubs such as pine and black locust and clear and pile brush at the Silo and Barn courses. Prairie and oak barrens once covered much of the southern half of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, but are now rare. They are threatened by natural fire suppression and the spreading of invasive plants.

Work will take place on the Silo Course, located on Livingston Road, south of M-59 between Duck Lake and Milford Roads.

All volunteers are asked to register with the volunteer coordinator, Laurel Malvitz-Draper at 248-359-9057 or email at malvitzl@michigan.gov .

Please remember to bring along appropriate clothing for outdoor weather, boots, gloves, eye protection and drinking water. Activities are best suited to those 15 years of age and older.

For general questions regarding the stewardship volunteer program please contact Laurel Malvitz at 248-359-9057 or by email at  malvitzl@michigan.gov.
