The State of Michigan cooperates with other states and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to census local, migrant, and wintering waterfowl populations to determine population status and habitat use trends. Weekly waterfowl count surveys are conducted at managed waterfowl areas to provide data as an index on dabbling duck abundance and migration timing through southern Michigan. Aerial and ground waterfowl count surveys are conducted during fall and winter each year. During the surveys, all ducks, geese, and swans observed during surveys are recorded.
