Director of the Joint Staff - Michigan Army National Guard
Brigadier General Phillip Owens began his military career in 1982 as an infantry Private in the Michigan Army National Guard. After completing basic and AIT at Ft. Benning, GA, he enrolled in ROTC at Western Michigan University. As a cadet, BG Owens was an acting platoon leader in C Co, 3rd Bn, 126 Inf . BG Owens graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate from ROTC and received a Regular Army Commission in 1984. His assignments have included infantry platoon leader and mortar platoon leader for 4th Bn, 17 Inf, 7th ID; B Company Commander, Combat Service Support Company Commander, S-4, and S-3 for 3rd Bn, 126th Inf; Assistant S-3 46th Bde; OCS Training Company Commander for Michigan Army National Guard; Battalion Commander 1st Bn, 125th Inf; Executive Officer, Engineer Bde, 38th Inf Div; and S-3, 63rd Bde; Brigade Commander 63rd Bde Troop Command MIARNG; J-3 for the Michigan National Guard; and G-1 and then Chief of Staff for the 46th MP Command. His current position is Director of the Joint Staff Michigan National Guard.
BG Owens has a BA degree from Cornerstone University and a Masters Degree from the US Army War College. His military schools include Airborne School, Ranger School, Infantry Officer Basic Course, Infantry Officer Advance Course, Combined Arms and Service Staff School, Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College. BG Owens is the owner of Owens Financial Services and has over 25 years experience in the financial service industry. He and his wife, Sue, have three children; Sarah, Lee, and Jillian.
