Alzheimer's and Special Needs Care at The Grand Rapids Home for Veterans

There are Alzheimer's units at the GRHV and the DJJHV; two and one, respectively. The staff has been trained to serve Alzheimer's members throughout the various stages of the disease. The staff-to-member ratio exceeds OBRA standards, and there is a full-time physician on staff for these units. Additional support efforts include behavior programs, full-time activity staff, and family support groups. These are safe and beautiful environments, with secured outside courtyards at the GRHV.

The GRHV has a Special Needs unit. It provides care for members who are dually diagnosed - psychiatric and medical - and have been assessed as appropriate for the home. A multi-disciplinary behavior management program is used to help maintain or restore maximum rehabilitation potential. the full range of concentrations - medical, nursing, social work, dietary, and activities - is available on this unit. Experienced supervisors direct the day-to-day operations of this secured unit, which also has a courtyard.
