Dan Lohrmann

Dan leads the Executive Office Cyber Committee and several cross-agency security committees and working groups. He also serves as an advisor to the Tech America Cloud Computing Commission. Mr. Lohrmann represents Michigan and the National Association of Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) on the Department of Homeland Security's IT Government Coordinating Council (IT-GCC). In this role, Mr. Lohrmann addresses Homeland Security issues such as state communications, intelligence sharing, writing and implementing the National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP) IT Sector Plan, and privacy and security best practices.

Mr. Lohrmann previously served as the State of Michigan's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) from January 2009 to October 2011. He also was Michigan's first Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Director of Enterprise Security from May 2002 until January 2009.  Mr. Lohrmann was named CSO of the Year by SC Magazine and Public Official of the Year by Governing Magazine in 2008.

Mr. Lohrmann has over 26 years' experience in the computer industry, beginning with the National Security Agency (NSA) in Washington, D.C. He spent three years in England as a senior network engineer for Lockheed Martin (formerly Loral Aerospace) followed by four years as IT Director for ManTech International on a US/UK military base.  In 1997, Mr. Lohrmann moved to Michigan where he served as CIO and IT Services Director for the Michigan Department of Management and Budget.

Over the past decade, Mr. Lohrmann has led both public and private organizations. Mr. Lohrmann served as President of Michigan InfraGard Member Alliance in 2006-2007 and as Chairman for 2008-2009. He also served for four years as an Executive Board member of the Multi-State Information Sharing & Analysis Center (MS-ISAC), which coordinates cybersecurity actions among the 50 states. Within Michigan's Department of Information Technology (MDIT), Mr. Lohrmann served as the Emergency Management Coordinator, and he led Michigan's efforts to restore IT operations following the northeast blackout of 2003.

Prior to his role as Michigan CISO, Mr. Lohrmann was the Senior Technology Executive for e-Michigan, the agency responsible for digital government in Michigan. Playing a central role in the success of the Michigan.gov portal launch in July 2001, he served as technical advisor and program manager for the Director of e-Michigan and the Governor on implementing enterprise-wide digital government projects. Mr. Lohrmann published and presented an academic paper entitled: "The Michigan.gov Story" at WebNet 2001 in Orlando.

Mr. Lohrmann's first book, Virtual Integrity: Faithfully Navigating the Brave New Web, was published in November 2008 by Brazos Press. Mr. Lohrmann is a regular speaker at global technology and security conferences, and he has been quoted by world-wide news organizations on a wide variety of technical and security topics. He writes a regular column for Public CIO Magazine, and he blogs for Government Technology Magazine and CSO Magazine.

Mr. Lohrmann holds a Master's Degree in Computer Science (CS) from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and a Bachelor's Degree in CS from Valparaiso University in Indiana.  Mr. Lohrmann is a distinguished lecturer for the Master's Program in Information Assurance at Norwich University.
