Federal Surplus - Are there any restrictions on the use of Federal Surplus Property?
 
Answer:

Yes. All surplus property must be used in an authorized and eligible program; personal or private use of surplus property is prohibited.

 

All items must be placed in use for the purposes for which acquired within one year of receipt. Items with an acquisition cost of less than $5,000, except passenger cars, shall be used continuously for a period of 12 months.

 

All passenger cars and items with an acquisition cost exceeding $5,000, except for non-combat aircraft and watercraft exceeding 50 feet in length, shall be used continuously for a period of 18 months.

 

Non-combat aircraft and watercraft exceeding 50 feet in length shall be used continuously for a period of 60 months.
