DOCUMENTING YOUR COMPLAINT

To ensure a successful investigation process, you should collect copies of relevent documents such as:

  • Contracts
  • Price quotations
  • Proof of payment for work (e.g., canceled check, receipt, closing statement)
  • Notes you may have taken
  • Written documentation of any estimate(s) for repair
  • Building inspection report, if applicable

Keep copies of all documents sent to the department.

When filing a complaint that alleges workmanship and code violations against a builder, you must contact the local building code enforcement official and request a signed inspection report verifying poor workmanship or construction code violations.  The department cannot process a workmanship or code violation complaint without a signed building inspection report.

FILING YOUR COMPLAINT

Your complaint must be in writing and signed.  Describe the factual basis for the allegation.  Do not include any information such as your social security number that you do not want released to the to the respondent.  Do not send bulky material.  If additional information is needed you will be contacted.

If the complaint is against a residential builder or maintenance and alteration contractor, it must be filed within 18 months after completion, occupancy or purchase, whichever occurs later.  A complaint may be filed against any other licensed party at any time.
