| Employment Opportunity Workshops |
|
People with disabilities have been exempted from (and in some cases, not allowed) participating in the work programs that TANF recipients have been offered in making the transition from welfare to work. Believing that people with disabilities want to work, MCDC has developed this workshop as a way to assist people with disabilities in their search for employment by enabling them to contact employment supports in their communities. This workshop is a collaborative effort between MCDC and local offices of The Deparment of Labor and Economic Growth, Department of Career Development-Rehabilitation Services, Michigan Commission for the Blind, Michigan Works!, and community colleges. Because of the ongoing concern of losing benefits, a representative from the local Social Security Administration presents information about the current SSI Work Incentive program that allows individuals to earn considerable income while maintaining their SSI or Medicaid benefits. Local employers, with jobs available, are present at the workshop and bring job applications for the attendees to fill out, in many cases for the first time.
A major goal of this workshop is for the attendees to begin thinking of themselves as potential employees who have skills and abilities to offer to employers. For many of these individuals, this may be their first time seeking employment, and the Commission, and its partners, can assist by letting them know that there are agencies in their community that are willing and able to assist them in their job search. It is also important for them to realize that there are those in their community that believe that they can and want to work.
